How to Choose Where to Stay in Zanzibar
Zanzibar's geography means that where you stay shapes your entire holiday. The island is about 90km long and 30km wide, so moving between areas takes time. Picking the right base from the start saves you hassle and lets you make the most of your days.
There are five main tourist areas, each with a very different vibe:
Stone Town
UNESCO World Heritage Site. Narrow alleys, carved wooden doors, night markets, rooftop bars, and the best food scene on the island. No beach — but perfect for culture lovers or as a first or last night base. 15–20 minutes from the airport.
Nungwi (North)
White sand, calm water swimmable at all tides, lively beach bars, dhow sunset trips. Nungwi is the most popular beach area. Good range of guesthouses, mid-range hotels and a few luxury resorts. Lively atmosphere — not the best choice if you want quiet.
Kendwa (North-West)
Quieter than Nungwi, slightly less development, also swimmable year-round. Famous for its monthly full moon beach party. Good mix of mid-range and boutique resorts.
Paje (South-East)
World-class kitesurfing spot. Slow-paced, bohemian atmosphere. Tidal flats (the sea goes way out at low tide — check tides before booking). More affordable than the north coast. Growing number of boutique guesthouses and eco-camps.
Jambiani (South-East)
Authentic fishing village feel. Long, wide beach with seaweed farms visible at low tide. More local, less tourist development than Nungwi. Good for travelers wanting a relaxed, genuine experience.
Matemwe & Kiwengwa (North-East)
Beautiful sunrise beaches, access to Mnemba Atoll (exceptional diving and snorkelling). Quieter and more spread out. Home to several of the island's top luxury and boutique resorts. Best for couples and honeymoons.

- Honeymoon or romantic escape: Matemwe, Kiwengwa, or a boutique resort in Nungwi.
- Budget travelers: Paje guesthouses, Stone Town budget hotels, or Jambiani.
- Kitesurfers: Paje is the answer — no question.
- Divers and snorkellers: Matemwe for Mnemba Atoll; Nungwi for reef dives.
Booking Tips
- Book early for peak season (June–October and December–January) — good places sell out months ahead.
- Many smaller guesthouses don't appear on Booking.com — it's worth messaging them directly on WhatsApp once you have a shortlist.
- Check what is and isn't included: breakfast, airport transfer, beach access, and WiFi vary significantly.
- Verify the tide schedule for your dates if staying in Paje or Jambiani — low tide means no swimming for several hours each day.
