Zanzibar has a wide range of places to stay, from simple beach bandas and backpacker hostels to award-winning boutique resorts and luxury private villas. Here's a quick overview:
- Budget guesthouses: From ~$20–50/night. Mostly in Stone Town, Paje and Jambiani. Basic rooms, shared or en-suite bathrooms, fan or basic A/C.
- Mid-range hotels: ~$60–150/night. Good standard of comfort, often including breakfast, beach access, and a pool.

- Luxury resorts: $400+ per night. Private beach, infinity pools, overwater or beachfront villas. Several world-class properties in Matemwe and Kiwengwa.

Hotels by Area
Stone Town
Most Stone Town accommodation is in converted Arab merchant houses. Expect rooftop terraces, carved wood furniture, and a central location. No beach in Stone Town itself, but you're close to the airport, ferries, restaurants and cultural attractions. Good for short stays or as a base before heading to the coast.
Nungwi
The widest range of options. Budget guesthouses start at $25/night; mid-range beach hotels around $80–150; boutique resorts from $200+. Nungwi Beach Hotel, Z Hotel and Essque Zalu are popular choices at different price points. Note: Nungwi can get lively at night — ask about noise if you're a light sleeper.
Kendwa
Slightly quieter than Nungwi with a more intimate feel. Rocks Hotel Kendwa has been popular for years and has a loyal following. A good choice for couples wanting beach life without Nungwi's busier scene.
Paje
Best for kitesurfers and those on a moderate budget. Baraka Natural Aquarium, Paje Beach Camp, and several eco-guesthouses offer good value. Check tide conditions before booking beach-facing rooms — the tidal flat at low tide means no swimming for hours at a time.
Matemwe & Kiwengwa
Home to some of the island's top luxury properties. Matemwe Retreat and Seasons Lodge Zanzibar are standouts. Perfect for honeymooners or anyone wanting seclusion and excellent snorkelling (Mnemba Atoll is close).
What to Check Before You Book
- Is breakfast included?
- Does the hotel offer airport transfers (and at what cost)?
- What's the cancellation policy? (Important for last-minute itinerary changes.)
- For beach areas: check tide conditions for your dates (Paje/Jambiani especially).
- Is the property adults-only or family-friendly?
- Are there mosquito nets or air conditioning in the room?
